Background

In an ideal location the background should be a cement/sand rendered brickwork or concrete blockwork wall but in this era of fast track construction dry wall systems, is nowadays more likely to be some form of stud partition walling and the floor, a flooring grade chipboard or a proprietary joint and board construction.

Cement backer boards are readily available these days and, where possible, should be preferred to water sensitive boards such as plasterboard. If waterproof and boil proof plywood (WBP) is used for the walls it should be wall braced prior to tanking. Wet applied gypsum plaster should be at least 4 weeks and dry throughout before tanking and tiling. It is advisable to seal board surfaces on their backs and edges with a suitable water resistant bonding agent/primer such as BAL Bond SBR.
